Well done to our Year 3/4 gymnasts for their performance in the annual MSN Association Gymnastics Competition, held at Writhlington School this week. We entered a team for the Level 1 and Level 2 competition. Our Level 1 team came 3rd and the Level 2 team came 4th. All 10 gymnasts learnt their routines brilliant and should be proud of themselves! Well done everyone!

4th May 2016 - Superb Spirit from Double Cross-Country Champions!

Today brought the annual MSN Association Cross-Country races at Somervale School. We sent 16 boys and 14 girls (one of the highest amount of competitors) to the event in search of achieving personal milestones by completing the tough race. There were approximately 90 children in each race and everybody who finished was awarded a medal.

It was the girls race first and they all showed superb determination to finish the course. We had five children finish in the top 20 (Lottie - 4th, Lois - 9th, Lilli - 13th, Olivia 14th & Charlotte - 18th) and due to the hard work of the entire team...we came FIRST out of all the girls' teams there! A super showing!

This then meant the boys had a tough act to follow, but like the girls, they all pulled together to complete the race. We had six children in the top 20 (Ashton - 6th, Fletcher - 8th, Will S - 10th, Korey - 16th, Ollie - 17th, Dominic - 18th) and like the girls...they also came FIRST!

We were so proud of everybody who raced. Everybody performed magnificently and should be proud of their efforts!

3rd May 2016 - The Football Quadruple Has Been Completed!

Our footballers completed a historic 'Quadruple' this week thanks to a 3-0 victory in their final league match, against St John's MSN.

This league title is added to their Writhlington, Bridgwater and Somervale success to leave quite a few impressive trophies in our possession! 4 trophies and a top 16 place in the country...not a bad season I suppose...!

28th April - B&NES Hockey Runners Up and 3rd place!

Our hockey team(s) concluded their impressive season (2nd place at Norton Hill, 3rd place at County Finals) by taking part in the B&NES 6-a-side Hockey event at Wellsway School.

Our two teams qualified from their groups to reach the semi finals. Here, the B-Team came unstuck 3-1 to an impressive St Stephens team, whilst our A-Team managed to beat Oldfield Park Juniors 2-1. In a competitive final, St Stephens managed to secure a 2-0 win. Our B-Team managed to secure 3rd place by beating Oldfield Park 3-1 in the 3rd place play-off. Well done to our players - you were great!

27th April 2016 - Year 3/4 Football

Well done to our Year 3/4 footballers for their efforts at the Somervale Tournament today. They performed well as a team and, even though they didn't manage to qualify from their group, enjoyed the experience of playing football against others schools.

 26th April 2016 - Basketball Champs!

Our basketball team took part in the B&NES Basketball Tournament this week over at Wellsway. They competed against 7 other schools to claim the title.

In the initial group, the team managed to win all 3 of their games. The results were:

  • 4-2 vs Oldfield Park
  • 4-2 vs St Philip's
  • 12-0 vs Paulton

This meant we qualified for the semi-finals where we managed to beat Bathwick St Mary's 8-2. In the final, the team showed great bravery to come from 4-0 behind to claim a 6-4 win after a 'golden basket' scored by Dominic.

The team showed superb teamwork throughout and should be extremely proud of their performance! They even managed to get a photo with Bristol Flyers player Daniel Edozie!

23rd April 2016 - Amazing Effort From Our Football Team - Top 16 in the COUNTRY!

Thanks to winning two previous competitions, our school football team took part in the South West Regional ESFA Finals this weekend. With 4 regional finals taking place across the country, and 10 teams in each, this meant we had already become one of the top 40 teams in the country. The team were representing Somerset and were competing against teams from Cornwall, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Devon, Wiltshire, Hampshire & the Channel Islands.

The event started with a presentation to each team for reaching this stage. Every played received a medal and a plaque for their school.

In our group stage, the team recorded the following results:

2-0 vs Cornwall   1-0 vs Oxfordshire   0-1 vs Dorset   0-0 vs Gloucestershire

Each game was a real battle but the team acquited themselves magnificently to reach the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, the team played St Clement's Primary School from the Channel Islands, a team who had so far been unbeaten in the competition. Despite a heroic effort from the whole squad, we finally conceded and lost the game 1-0. The team lost to the better team on the day and accepted defeat like adults and straight away congratulated their opposition.

In the 3rd/4th play-off, a few injuries meant we had no substitutes and we eventually lost 2-1 to Dorset after extra-time. This meant that we finished 4th, which would place us in the top 16 schools nationally! This has been such an excellent journey for the team and they leave with many long-lasting memories. A HUGE well done to everyone who took part; we are very proud of your achievements!

23rd April 2016 - County Cross-Country

Well done to Cameron, Leo F, Lottie & Ollie for taking part in the county cross-country event at Ashton Gate in Bristol today. They qualified by finishing in the top 20 of the qualifying race at St Gregory's School in October and now were representing B&NES against other regions. A special well done to Cameron for finishing in an amazing 7th place!

21st April 2016 - Spring Games County Finals

Through local rounds in terms 4 and 5, we managed to secure 3 places at the Spring Games County Finals at Bristol Grammar School, in netball, hockey and archery. This is an amazing achievement as this area covers hundreds of schools and to even reach this stage was no mean feat!

Our netballers played superbly throughout their initial group, winning games 1-0, 4-1 & 4-2, which meant they qualified for the semi-finals. They unfortunately came unstuck at this stage and eventually finished in 4th place. Well done girls!

The hockey team also played excellently, winning 3 of their group games (1-0, 4-1, 7-0) and losing 2 (0-1, 0-1). This meant they scraped through to the quarter finals, which they confidently won 2-0. Unfortunately, the semi-final went down to a golden goal and the team were knocked out, but eventually finished 3rd. Super effort everyone!

The archery squad took part in a series of activites and were awarded the 'Best Teamwork' prize! Congratulations!

Well done to everyone who competed for their school - you did us all proud!

20th April 2016 - Footballers Retain Title!

Well done to our football team; they successfully defended the Somervale Football Tournament that they won back in 2015.

They won their two group games (2-0 vs Westfield, 4-0 vs St Vigor & St Johns) to progress to the semi-finals. There they played Paulton Juniors and managed to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win. In the final, they played Westfield again where they managed to put in a commanding performance to claim the win 1-0.

Well done boys!

23rd March 2016 - Netball Team Qualify for County Finals

Our netball team put in a great performance in the B&NES Netball Finals. They won their pool (winning 3/3 matches), and their semi final, which meant they qualifed for the final. They narrowly lost 5-4 to Saltford but did enough to qualify for the county finals at the end of April. Well done girls!

22nd March 2016 - Lacrosse Regional Champions!

Our relatively inexperienced lacrosse team took part in a regional lacrosse tournament today at Wellsway in Keynsham. At the same time, 15 of our Year 5 children took part in a lacrosse festival where they were able to practise their skills and play some informal games.

Our tournament team managed to perform magnificently and won all 5 of their games! The results were as follows:

  • 5-1 vs Bathford;
  • 3-1 vs Newbridge;
  • 2-1 vs Barley Close ;
  • 5-0 vs Paulton;
  • 6-0 vs Hillcrest.

This meant that the team have reached the National Pop Lacrosse Finals held in Sheffield in June! The team were a joy to coach and should be looking forward to a great experience later in the year!

18th March 2016 - Going the Extra Mile for Sport Relief

Our school took part in the Sport Relief celebrations on Friday, by taking part in the Sport Relief Mile.

Each class had a slot up on the school field to accumulate as many miles as they could, with the older children supporting the younger ones fantastically during their opportunity.

Eventually, we added up the total miles walked in the day which came to 702.3miles! This would've taken us all the way to Portugal! Each child took part with great enthusiasm and we thank them for raising money and awareness for such a worthy cause.

18th March 2016 - Year 3 Football Festival

Year 3 had a great time at the Somervale Football Festival today. They practised a range of passing, dribbling and shooting skills and took part in small games with children from other schools.

17th March 2016 - A Great Fightback win vs Paulton

Our football team closed in on the league title thanks to coming from 2-0 behind vs a very strong Paulton team. MSN scored just before half-time to close the gap, before turning in a fantastic performance in the second half to eventually claim a 5-2 victory. Well done team!

14th/16th March 2016 - Great Pride from Dance Umbrella

Over the past few terms, many of our KS1 and KS2 children have been practising relentlessly for the Dance Umbrella festival held this week.

Each group performed at the Bath Forum in front of hundreds of people...and how fantastic they both were! Both dances were put together by school staff and performed magnificently by the children - always with a huge smile on their faces too!

Well done to everyone for taking part and doing your school proud.

10th March 2016 - Into the Semi-Finals for our Netball Team!

Our netball team played a superb match vs Paulton this week, eventually securing a 21-15 victory to secure their place in the semi-finals. Their attitude was great and were always playing with a smile on their faces!

8th March 2016 - Lacrosse Taster Session for Y5/6

Year 5/6 got the chance to pick up a lacrosse stick today and experience a lacrosse taster session.

They worked on scooping the ball up and passing and catching. Lots of children were asking for more lacrosse after this which is always a clear indication of how much they enjoyed it!

8th March 2016 - International Women's Day Rugby Celebration

We sent 10 girls to take part in a celebration for International Women's Day this week.

They practised their skills and even got a chance to play with some England Women Internationals! The girls had a great day and loved the opportunity given to them!

25th February 2016 - Tag-Rugby

Our tag-rugby team did us proud at the annual B&NES Tag-Rugby tournament at Odd Down this week. They started off in a very tough group but managed to qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to wins against WASPS and Moorlands and despite an extremely close defeat against St Stephens.

The team sadly lost their quarter-final match (against the eventual champions) but should be very proud of their effort on the day! Well done everyone!

11th February 2016 - Another Football League Victory

Our footballers continued their unbeaton start to the season with a comprehensive 7-0 victory against a good Peasedown St John side. They now sit top of the league (W5 D1 L0) with just 2 more league matches to play.

10th February 2016 - County Finals Qualification for our Hockey Team

A big well done to our hockey team for qualifying for the West of England County Finals to be held in Bristol at the end of April.

They managed to secure this spot by battling against 15 other teams and eventually reaching the FINAL of the B&NES Quicksticks Competition. They competed honestly and fairly throughout and have done their school proud. Our 'B' team on the night also did fantastically well; they won 1 of their group games and narrowly missed out on a place in the Quarter-Finals. Well done to all our players!

4th February 2016 - Year 5 Futsal Runners Up

Our Year 5s gave us great confidence for next season today, with an impressive performance at the Year 5 B&NES Futsal tournament at Wellsway. They won their 3 group games (2-1, 5-0, 7-0) and this meant they qualified for the final. Unfortunately, they were edged out 1-0 by Paulton but our team should be very pleased with their performances!

1st February 2016 - Great Gymnastics!

After hot footing it back from UWE, our gymnastics team took part in the annual MSN Association Gymnastics competition at Writhlington. Our Level 1 team finished 5th, whilst out Level 2 team placed 2nd - both great achievements! Well done to the whole squad.

1st February 2016 - Athletics Success Once More!

Well done to the 24 year 5/6 children who went over to UWE today to compete in the Sportshall Athletics County Finals. In this event last year, we finished in a fantastic 3rd position, behind two huge schools from Bristol.

After a fantastic morning's sport, we nervously listened to the results...and found out that we finished 3rd once again! Last year we were 64 points off 1st, and this year it was a very close 12 points so who knows what could happen next year?!

Well done to the whole squad - you were a credit to our school!

Also - check out some comments from the squad below about why they were proud of a team-mate. Lovely reasons!

29th January 2016 - Football History Makers!

After qualifying for the football county finals (thanks to the Writhlington Tournament win in November) we headed to Bridgwater to compete against the best teams in Somerset once again, after making the semi-finals last year. The team were confident, nervous and excited, but most of all determined to do all they could do be successful.

MSN competed fantastically throughout the group stage, eventually winning the group after having won all 5 of their group matches. The scores were as follows:

1-0 vs St Joseph's

5-1 vs West Monkton

2-0 vs Northleaze

3-1 vs Milford

5-1 vs St Paul's

This saw us match last year's achievement of reaching the semi-finals...but the team weren't satisifed with that! In the semi-finals, we came up against a tough Preston team. After 14 minutes play, the scores were tied at 0-0. Extra-time still couldn't separate the teams, so penalties were needed. After some magnificent saves by goalkeeper Will S, we won the shootout 4-1, with MSN scoring all 4 of their penalties (Bill, Lewis, Fletcher & Danny).

The team were thrilled to be in the final, aiming for the grand prize. In the way of history, was Portishead, a team who had won their original pool confidently. In the first half, MSN went 1-0 behind - the first time they had been behind in a game all day. However, the team showed fantastic courage, resilience and determination to fight back and grab a late equaliser through Lewis. This meant that extra-time was needed (again!) and after a goalless 6 minutes, penalties would be needed (again!!). After more great saves by keeper Will, MSN won the shoot-out 3-1 and crowned themselves as 'Somerset County Champions' - for the first time in our school's history. Will S was rightly honoured for his unbelievable performance in goal with 'Player of the Match' award from the tournament organisers.

The team deserve so much credit for the passion they showed during the day. They never gave up, always performed as a team throughout and most of all had a smile on their faces all day! Our parent supporters were fantastic and really spurred the team on throughout the day - so thank you parents!

We now progress to the 'South West Regional Finals' held in April at Odd Down Sports Ground in Bath. Congratulations to the team for their fantastic and historic victory!

26th January 2016 - Swimming to Success!

Today saw the annual MSN Association Swimming Gala take place. We took 10 children to the event, all ready to give 100% for their school. The children performed amazingly throughout and eventually finished in a brilliant SECOND place - beaten only by an incredibly strong Paulton team.

We received individual race medals in the following races:

  • Girls 25m Freestyle - Lois - SILVER
  • Girls 25m Breaststroke - Lilli - SILVER
  • Boys 25m Breaststroke - Josh - BRONZE

25th January 2016 - Netball Cup - 'B' Team - Last 16

Our 'B' team played their Last 16 B&NES Netball Cup fixture today vs St Julian's 'B' team. They managed to win in convincing fashion and will now travel to Oldfield Park Juniors to take on their 'A' team in the quarter finals in a few weeks. Fingers crossed for them!

25th January 2016 - Football League (Match 5)

Our football team played St Nicholas today in a league match, aiming to carry on their unbeaten start to the season. They managed to eventually win 12-0 but had to battle in large parts of the game. Well done team!

24th January 2016 - MSN Pupils Representing the County in Athletics

Well done to Korey, Ioan, Lottie and Eva who, after attending trials in Bristol last week, were selected to represent Avon in the South West Regional Sportshall Athletics County Finals today.

We *think* they are the first ever pupils from MSN Primary to achieve this so we are very proud of them all! To add to their success already, they then went on to win the event! A huge well done!

13th January 2016 - Netball Cup - 'A' Team - Last 16

Our netball 'A' team played their Last 16 B&NES Cup game today vs Trinity. They put in a commanding performance and eventually won 18-1. They are now in the quarter finals where they will play either Paulton 'A' or St Johns 'B'. Good luck MSN!

12th January 2016 - Football League Victory (Match 4)

Our team managed to seal a convincing 10-0 victory this afternoon with a strong performance vs Welton. They played some lovely football on a wet and boggy pitch and managed to keep a clean sheet in the process. Well done boys!

7th January 2016 - Sportshall Athletics Success

The start of 2016 always means it is time for the annual B&NES Sportshall Athletics competition - one of the most enjoyable events of the school sporting year. We headed to Wellsway well prepared thanks to practising the events in PE last term and in some after-school sessions.

Our team performed excellently, competiting in events such as: standing triple/long jump, javelin, chest push and many exciting running races. We had to wait until the secon B&NES heat a few days later before we found that we had finished in FIRST position, which means we defended the title that we claimed for the first time last year.

Well done to all the 22 boys/girls who made up our squad; you were fantastic!

10th December 2015 - Netball Cup - 'B' Team - Round of 32

We have entered two teams in the B&NES Netball Cup this year. One of our teams received a bye into the Round of 16 and our second team played their first round match this week. They played Paulton 'B' and came through comfortable 8-3 winners. They go on to play St Julians 'B' in the Round of 16, whereas our other team will play Trinity 'A' in the new year in the same round. Exciting times!

9th December 2015 - Great-minton!

We took part in the Wellsway badminton competition this week over at Wellsway School. We sent an 'A' and a 'B' team who competed in separate leagues. We have played badminton in PE sessions and got together for a few after-school sessions so felt prepared to take on the other schools!

After some great play, our teams BOTH won their groups so we ended up taking home 8 shiny gold medals! Well done everyone!

4th December 2015 - Winter Sports Day

This term saw the introduction of an inter-house ‘Winter Sports Day’, in the form of a Sportshall athletics competition. Competitive sport is at the heart of the new National Curriculum so this was a good chance for everybody to take part in a competition.

Every Year 5/6 child took part in a field event and track races and in the end AQUILA came out on top!

Well done to everyone and thanks to Norton Hill for hosting us!

23rd November 2015 - Great football tournament for our girls!

Following our boys' success last week, our girls headed to the Writhlington Football Tournament hoping to do themselves proud. They won their first two matches (2-1 vs Clutton; 2-0 vs High Littleton) and so were in the 'finals group' with two very strong Trinity and Paulton teams.

Our girls battled heroically but succumbed in both games to a late winner and so ended up in a fantastic 3rd position out of the 9 teams. Well done girls - you did your school proud!

16th November 2015 - Writhlington Football Champions!

Our football team competed in the annual Writhlington Football Tournament this week, with the aim to defend their victory from last year. We entered two teams, and both did fantastically well to progess through to the semi-finals...where they played each other!

Group results:

A Team: 7-0 vs Paulton 'B'; 7-1 vs St Johns; 2-2 vs Trinity

B Team: 0-1 vs Paulton 'A'; 0-1 vs Peasedown; 3-0 vs St Vigor & St John

In the semi-final our 'A' team managed to claim the win and so reached the final where they played a strong Paulton team. After a nervous match, a last minute goal in extra-time from Lewis secured the victory for our team. This means we retained our trophy and now will progress into the county finals for the 2nd successive season. Well done everyone!

6th November 2015 - Year 6 Multi-Skills Festival

Our Year 6 children went over to Somervale this afternoon to take part in a multi-skills festival with a variety of other local primary schools.

They rotated through a range of hockey, football and rugby activities and despite the downpour of range, managed to maintain a positive attitude throughout! Well done everyone!

5th November 2015 - A Late Equaliser in the Football League (Match 3)

Our footballers played their 3rd game of the season this week, and despite leading 2-0, conceded two late goals to finish up in a 2-2 draw.

It was a very entertaining game and maintains the team's unbeaten run this season!

20th October 2015 - Another Football League Victory (Match 2)

"We played a football match at Westfield on Tuesday. We deserved to win and we did, 7-1. We dominated possession throughout and made some fantastic goals through neat passing.

William in goal made some outstanding saves and Lewis, Ollie & Bill all managed to score. If we carry on like this, we believe we can win the league!" by Ioan, Will & Fletcher (Earth Class).

15th October 2015 - Football League Kick Off (Match 1)

"On Thursday, we played a football match against St Vigor and St John. We eventually won 9-0!

It was a great first game of the season where we led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Lewis. In the second half we got 7 more goals including goals from Danny, Ollie and Ioan. Everybody put in a great performance. Well done lads!" by Lewis, Danny & Korey (Jupiter Class)

14th October 2015 - Netball Champions!

"On Wednesday 14th October, we went to a netball tournament at Somervale School. There were 11 other schools there. Our team successfully won all of our games with the following results:

5-1 vs Paulton

3-0 vs St Johns

2-0 vs Westfield

12-0 vs Welton

4-0 vs Trinity

These results then led us to the semi-finals against St Julians School.

The score was 1-1 so it went to extra-time where we had 3 minutes to see how many we could score. In that 3 minutres, we managed to eventually win 3-1. In the final, we played Paulton Juniors again and fortunately we won 3-0 which meant we were the champions! We will now go to the B&NES netball competition in March." by Frankie (Jupiter Class)

30th September 2015 - Cross-country battlers!

This week, we sent 28 year 5/6 children to compete in a tough cross-country competition over at St Gregory's School in Bath. The team tried their upmost to navigate themselves through the tricky course, and did everybody proud!

The final team positions were as follows (each event was our of 19 teams in total):

Year 5 Boys: 3rd

Year 5 Girls: 4th

Year 6 Boys: 5th

Year 6 Girls: 5th

Well done to everyone who competed but especially to Cameon, Ollie T, Leo, Cora, Savannah, Lottie, Ioan and Ollie who have qualified to represent B&NES in an event in November, due to finishing in the top 20 in their race.

28th September 2015 - A winning start to the sporting season!

"On Monday, Midsomer Norton Primary School took two teams to Peasedown St John Primary School to play in a rounders tournament. Sadly, our 'A' team unfortunately lost their first game but soon recovered to win their next two games which led them into the final! Meanwhile, our 'B' team did extremely well in winning all three of their matches, which also meant they were in the final! Because both teams made it into the final, we had to play each other in a MSN derby!

In the final match, the final score was 4-4, so it went to sudden death. 3 batters from each team had to bat and whoever got the most rounders would win. The 'A' team went first and managed to score half a rounder. Then, the 'B' team went and scored a whole rounders thanks to Lewis who smashed the ball as far as he could! Both teams were very pleased with the whole tournament and should be very proud of themselves!" by Cori & Lottie (Year 6).

20th July 2015 - Gold for Midsomer Norton Primary!

Following an application from us over the summer in 2015, we are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Sainsbury's School Games GOLD Mark, to go with our SILVER Mark that we received in 2014. This award reflects many things to do with our PE provision in school, including:

  • The quantity of high-quality PE lessons our children receive each week;
  • The amount of children participating in extra-curricular sporting activity each week;
  • The support we provide for our talented young sports people and less active children;
  • The number of competitive events we take part in each year.

By receving the Gold award, it really does put us among the top schools in the country for the opportunities we provide in PE. We are very proud of this award and hope it can be used as a springboard to develop our PE teaching even more!
